B&B Catharinenburg, Golf & Bed Horse & Bed

The history of the island of Goeree-Overflakkee began at a time when the west of the country was a large inland lake, bordered by the high sand and gravel grounds in the east and closed off by a large dune range in the west, which at the time lay much further west than is the case today. Through the gaps in that dune range, the seawater flowed in and out twice a day, each time leaving behind sand and clay. The large rivers such as the Meuse, Rhine and Scheldt also contributed to the sedimentation. In this way, the bottom of the inland lake was gradually raised.

At low tide, banks became visible, which eventually only flooded at high tide. High-lying areas were protected by dikes. This resulted in a pattern in which various polders, varying greatly in size, lay like a kind of island kingdom amidst wet mudflats, gorses and sea arms. In a later phase, connecting dikes were constructed between these polders, gradually creating the current Goeree-Overflakkee.

The polder in which Golfbaan Catharinenburg is located, originated around 1480 as the polder 'Roxenisse'. It is actually one of the extensions of the polder 'Dirksland', which was already reclaimed in 1416 and of which the northern gorzen were later reclaimed.

Within the polder, two historic farms can be seen: 'de Halsstee' and 'Catharinenburg'. At Catharinenburg, there is now a golf course and a B&B.

Former owner and founder Jan-Leen Mijnders said that in the early 90s there was a small golf course in Ouddorp, but that it had to disappear because of the expansion of a camping site. The board of the golf club then went looking for a new location and that is how Mr. Mijnders ended up. After a year of observation, the course grew from 10 to 30 hectares.

This turned out to be a bull's eye, as there appeared to be a great need for a golf course in this quiet part of the Netherlands.
