We didn't expect anything from this...

The coffee was too strong at first and then too weak again. The bed itself was okay, although she would have been better off with a firmer mattress for 'her back'. Well. And then there was the weather. Typical Dutch-just-not-there weather, she called it. No rain, no sun, but vague, low-hanging grey. If there was one thing that made her depressed, it was this type of weather.

But we had the strong impression that this was not about the weather or the coffee. We thought there was more going on here. And indeed, the lady did not show up for the second breakfast and the gentleman sat there staring into space by himself. We asked if something was wrong, if we could help with anything.

'If that were possible?' he replied. 'But you probably can't save our marriage, can you? Because that's not going to work out anymore, that's what we found out last night. I'm sorry we brought so much negativity, because you don't deserve it. And your B&B either, because there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.'

We are quite used to frank conversations with our guests, but we didn't even have to return this.
